1. Promoting Root Formation
· Effect: NAA is most commonly used to stimulate the development of adventitious roots in stem and leaf cuttings of a wide variety of plants.
· Application: Cuttings are dipped into a powder or solution formulation containing NAA before being planted. This significantly increases the success rate and speed of propagation for many ornamental and fruit species.

2. Fruit Thinning
· Effect: When applied to fruit trees (such as apples, pears, and peaches) during or shortly after bloom, NAA promotes the abscission (natural dropping) of a portion of the young fruits.
· Application: This thinning effect helps to prevent over-cropping, which can lead to small, poor-quality fruit and weaken the tree. By reducing the fruit load, the remaining fruits grow larger and of higher quality, and the tree's overall health is maintained.
3. Preventing Pre-Harvest Fruit Drop
· Effect: In some fruit trees like apples, a natural drop of nearly-mature fruit can occur before harvest. NAA can effectively delay the formation of the abscission layer at the fruit stalk, keeping the fruit firmly attached to the tree.
· Application: This allows for a more controlled and efficient harvest, reduces fruit loss, and ensures the fruit reaches optimal maturity.
4. Other Effects
· Inducing Flowering: In some specific plants, such as pineapple, NAA can be used to induce and synchronize flowering.
· Herbicide: In higher concentrations, NAA can act as a selective herbicide to control broadleaf weeds in cereal crops like wheat and corn.
